Four Stages of Water Problems

Water problems are aggressive and progressive. They may start unknowingly to you but will become apparent soon enough. The earlier you get a handle on the water problems in your basement, the less costly it will be to you later. Save yourself the headache.

There are four stages of water problems:

  1. Mold and mildew along with damp, musty odors;
  2. Wall and floor cracks, efflorescence;
  3. Standing water and/or puddles to flooding; and,
  4. Flooding, wall movement and/or silt.

Mold and mildew are just plain gross. They can bring unwanted pests, allergies and illnesses into your home. If you have forced air heating, the mold and mildew are not just confined to your basement but throughout your home. Who wants a dank stinky basement? This could cost you thousands in value to your home.Wall and floor cracks give water easy access to your basement or crawlspace. They can also increase in size due to temperature changes throughout the year. White powder known as efflorescence is a decay to the concrete holding up your home.

Standing water can continue to breed mold and feed pests. It also means that you probably dread the manual mopping and sopping after every major rain fall.

Finally, if you ignore your problems for long enough your house may actually begin to shift. Without a solid foundation, the weight of your home begins to “re-settle,” if you will. This is never a good sign.
